The best ophthalmic adaptive optics systems today already approach diffraction-limited imaging using the fully dilated pupil. Modest improvements will no doubt accrue through improved wavefront sensing, better deformable mirror technology, more careful calibration, and optimized control algorithms. Small resolution gains could be achieved by decreasing wavelength, but this approach is problematic because of the eye’s susceptibility to damage at short wavelengths [75]. The most significant gains are likely to arise by combining adaptive optics with new imaging technologies.
