Austin remained a quiet town into the 60s, while its counterparts, Dallas and Houston, skyrocketed to big city status. The high-tech and real estate booms in the 60s and early 70s turned Austin into one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation. Austin quickly became a computer and scientific hub, partly because companies could feed off of the University of Texas' graduates, and partly because they could offer a quality of living that was no longer affordable in Silicon Valley. Austin became home to Dell, IBM, Motorola, Texas Instruments, Tracor, Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, 3M, Radian, and the list continues to grow.
Cold fronts usually only drop temperatures 5° or so. The winter is a different creature. It can be a beautiful 80° one day, and a frigid 10° the next (though most of the time it leans toward 70°). Be prepared for everything. Also, the warm coastal influence produces humidity that at times feels choking. The coast gets the worst of the humidity, but Austin and San Antonio can occasionally have bad days. Spring and fall are both beautiful for Central Texas. Spring sometimes sneaks in during the late portions of February and is in full swing by March.
